Friday, December 6: Strangers Drowning: Impossible Idealism, Drastic Choices, and the Urge to Help (2016 Book Selection) by Larissa MacFarquhar
Strangers Drowning Description: In Strangers Drowning, Larissa MacFarquhar explores lives of extreme ethical commitment through intimate stories of individuals grappling with profound dilemmas, from a couple who adopt numerous children to a woman who sacrifices personal comfort for charitable giving. These narratives illuminate their stubborn integrity, brave choices, and the complex moral landscapes they navigate. MacFarquhar also traces the historical skepticism towards such extreme altruism in Western culture, raising vital questions about the limits of compassion and our responsibilities to others amidst competing needs. Strangers Drowning challenges readers to reflect on what it means to prioritize altruism and wrestles with the tension between caring for strangers and our closest loved ones.
